Originally, the numbers 1-11 indicated positions on the pitch, but the modern game is different and sometimes the players wear their favourite number. Number 1 is still almost always the starting goalkeeper and 2-5 are often defenders. The higher numbers are the forwards with numbers 9 and 10 often being the strikers.
