Football Superlatives
This activity is based around a chart containing information about football. It is a quick quiz reading activity and can be used to either practice or present superlatives and comparatives.
Preparation
Download this pdf and print some copies of the Premier League Facts. (This worksheet was created during the 2012 - 2013 season)
If your students have computer access you can ask them to do this online and save printing costs.
Print up copies of the quiz.
Football Facts Quiz
1. Which club is the oldest?
2. How many clubs were established later than Chelsea?
3. Which stadium has the largest capacity?
4. Which club is the farthest North?
5. Which London club is the oldest?
6. Which London club has the smallest stadium?
7. Which club is the closest neighbor to Aston Villa?
8. Which club is the farthest from Newcastle?
9. How many stadiums are bigger than Anfield?
10. (Write your own question and answer)
Procedure
Put copies of the facts sheet around the walls of the classroom or give one to each group of 4 - 6 students.
Tell them to work in teams to answer the quiz questions. Give out the quiz and give them time to find the information. Tell them they also have to write one more question to add on to the quiz before they finish.
Once the have completed the quiz tell them the answers and see what they wrote for the final question. It will be interesting to see if the wrote a question including a superlative or comparative form.
Next put on the board the words big, bigger and biggest and ask the students to underline similar words in the questions.
Get the words up on the board and see if they can add the other forms of the word (i.e. late , later , latest.). Ask the students to clarify the ‘rules’ for changing the forms of the words. Help them if they don’t know.
Ask them to try to write 5 more questions about the information on the chart.
