Introduction to week 1 of the World Cup Community Programme

Introduction to week 1 of the World Cup Community Programme

Welcome to week 1 of the Premier Skills English World Cup Community Programme.

This is the first week in a four-week programme designed around the World Cup and English. Each week, there will be lessons for you to complete that will teach you about the countries that are competing, the language you need when watching the match and special grammar and vocabulary related to the World Cup.

In week 1, the first lesson is the World Cup WebQuest 1. This is like an online treasure hunt. You have to travel around the world, well, digitally. Each week, we’re taking 8 countries and you have to answer some tough questions based on the information in our country profiles.

The second lesson is a football shout-out. In these short podcasts, we look at the language people use when they are watching the game. It’s the language people shout-out at the TV. This lesson is focused on the language people shout at the TV when their team scores a goal.

The third lesson is another football shout-out. In this lesson, we look at the language people shout at their TVs when there’s a foul.

The fourth lesson in this week 1 of the World Cup Activity Programme is our weekly language podcast. For the duration of this programme, we’re talking World Cup in our regular podcast. This means that we’ll look closely at grammar and vocabulary related to the language we use during the cup. We’re still at the beginning of the tournament so now everyone’s talking about their team’s chances and who’s going to win, so this week’s podcast is all about the language we use when we make predictions.

At the end of every lesson, there are some discussion questions. We love reading all your comments and there are usually some really good questions and answers. Everything is more fun when you do it together so get involved in the discussions, share your ideas and let other people know what you think of their ideas and questions and let’s make this World Cup Community Programme a place where everyone is welcome.

I hope you enjoy the lessons in this Week 1 of the World Cup Community Programme and even more importantly, enjoy the football.
